My First Amigurumi Story: The Ugly Bunny That Saved Me

This is my first amigurumi story, and it begins in a very unexpected moment of my life. After losing my 19-week pregnancy, I felt completely empty. I didn’t want to do anything, think about anything, or even exist. I spent hours scrolling through Pinterest without purpose… until one day I saw a little amigurumi bunny that felt strangely comforting.

I only remembered how to make single crochet stitches, so I had to refresh my beginner crochet skills from scratch. I didn’t know what a magic ring was, and I had no idea these little dolls were stuffed. Still, I went to a bazaar, bought a white skein of yarn (one of those yarns that now makes me say, “What a terrible choice!”), and grabbed a random hook.

Learning Amigurumi From Zero: The Beginning of My First Amigurumi Story

The magic ring was a battle. I watched several YouTube tutorials and failed the first attempts, but eventually I did it. In that moment, I understood that learning amigurumi wouldn’t be easy… but it would be worth it. And when that circle finally closed, I felt a spark of happiness—something I hadn’t felt in a long time. That tiny loop became the beginning of a new chapter for me.

Crocheting forced me to focus on something new, and without noticing, I stopped feeding my sadness. The world of amigurumi opened its doors to me, and there was no turning back.

And my first amigurumi… well, it came out ugly. I worked the stitches in reverse because I didn’t know the “pretty side” should face out. And for stuffing? I used toilet paper, because I had no idea where to buy fiberfill. Of course the result looked nothing like the perfect Pinterest dolls. My first amigurumi was wonky, lumpy, and not very pleasant to touch.

But you know what?
That ugly little bunny saved me.
It pulled me out of a very dark place and gave me a reason to keep going. I still keep it like a treasure, even if it’s crooked and poorly made. For me, it represents the moment I began to move forward—stitch by stitch.

👉 And you? Do you remember your first amigurumi? Was it cute, or did it join the “team ugly bunny” like mine? 😅
